Atletico Madrid defeated Valencia 3-2 at home on Wednesday and maintained their hope of hitting the big time in the Spanish league title race, falling nine points behind leaders FC Barcelona with four rounds remaining.

The Catalan team has 80 points in 34 matches, against 71 of the “mattress”.

If Atleti loses against Real Valladolid on Saturday, Barça will be champions before their match against Levante on the same day.

Simeone’s side prevailed with goals from Alvaro Morata, Antoine Griezmann, and Angel Correa at 8, 49 and 81 minutes respectively.

Kevin Gameiro and Daniel scored a penalty equaliser for Valencia at 37 and 77 minutes.
