The Baltimore Ravens are bringing back a familiar face along their defensive front. Six-time Pro Bowl defensive lineman Calais Campbell is signing a one-year deal to return to Baltimore, according to reporting confirmed Thursday by ESPN and the Baltimore Sun. Terms of the agreement were not immediately disclosed.
The Calais Campbell Ravens signing will mark his 19th NFL season. He turns 40 on Sept. 1 and previously suited up for Baltimore from 2020 to 2022. Campbell earned a Pro Bowl nod in his first season with the team.
He spent 2025 back with the Arizona Cardinals, where his career began. Across all 17 games, Campbell posted 6.5 sacks and 43 tackles, including nine for loss. He also added two passes defended and 16 quarterback hits.
Ravens address a thin defensive line
The move targets what had become one of Baltimore’s thinner position groups after the draft. Among current Ravens defensive linemen, only Travis Jones, John Jenkins and CJ Okoye played more than 100 snaps last season.
Nnamdi Madubuike is working back from neck surgery after appearing in just two games in 2025. Broderick Washington is also recovering, returning from Achilles surgery. The Ravens used only one draft pick on the defensive line, selecting Rayshaun Benny out of Michigan in the seventh round.
Campbell’s veteran presence gives the unit immediate stability. He provides a rotational interior anchor while younger players develop and injured starters return to form.
A long-rumored reunion finally happens
Campbell’s path back to Baltimore had been a recurring storyline. The Ravens came close to trading for him from the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2024 deadline. They had also considered adding him in free agency in earlier offseasons.
By waiting until this week to finalize the deal, the signing will not count against Baltimore’s compensatory pick formula. The Ravens are currently projected to receive four compensatory picks in the 2027 draft. The timing protects that capital while still adding a proven veteran.
A decorated career resumes in Baltimore
For his career, Campbell has 117 sacks, 282 quarterback hits and 18 forced fumbles. He was named first-team All-Pro in 2017, the same year he finished second in Defensive Player of the Year voting.
Campbell also earned a spot on the NFL’s All-Decade Team for the 2010s. Few active defensive linemen can match that résumé heading into a 19th season.
His return adds experience and locker-room leadership to a defense that expects to contend in 2026. Head coach John Harbaugh’s group now has a clearer rotation along the interior. The Ravens enter the summer with a defensive front that looks deeper than it did 48 hours ago.
