Adam Schefter hits back at retirement rumors: “No f***ing chance.”

Adam Schefter, one of the most recognizable voices in NFL media, has emphatically shut down speculation about his imminent retirement from ESPN— describing the rumors as wildly premature.

The veteran sports reporter, 59, has been a fixture in American football coverage since 2004, first at NFL Network and then at ESPN, where he joined as a football analyst in 2009. With more than 11 million followers on X and a widely listened-to podcast, Schefter remains one of the most-followed insiders in the sport.

Speculation about a potential exit surfaced this week, fueled in part by comparisons to his longtime friend Adrian Wojnarowski, who stepped away from ESPN’s basketball coverage. But Schefter wasted no time addressing the chatter head-on during an episode of his podcast.

I know a lot has been made about my age this week and how I’m retiring. Which by the way, no f***ing chance about that if you don’t mind my language.

He also joked that the coverage had made him feel as if he’d been portrayed as “ancient,” although under the average American retirement timeline he would still have up to six years left in his working life.

Schefter remains a central figure at ESPN, contributing regularly to Get UpFirst Take, and Monday Night Countdown, in addition to his role as the network’s primary NFL insider.

The news comes amid significant change at the network. ESPN recently completed a $3 billion acquisition of the NFL Network, though the deal’s full impact on personnel remains unclear. ESPN has expressed a keen interest in bringing on board NFL Network reporter Ian Rapoport, whose contract is set to expire in May. Rapoport had been floated as a potential successor to Schefter — a narrative that Schefter has now effectively put on hold.
