Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane joked about the possibility of meeting opponents in the last 16 of the 2019/2020 Champions League. Zidane said Los Blancos would keep defending champions Liverpool out of the round of 16.
Zidane spoke with the media after Madrid’s 3-1 win over Club Brugge in the final match of Group A in the Jan Breydel Stadium on Thursday (12/12/2019) early morning hrs.
Los Blancos are second in the group behind Paris Saint-Germain and prepare to face a relatively tougher opponent in the last 16.
Liverpool (Group E winners) is likely to be one of the teams that can face the La Liga giants in the last 16 and when questioned about that possibility, Zidane replied jokingly claiming that Madrid would eliminate defending champions Liverpool if they met.
“If we play against Liverpool, we will get rid of them,” the Frenchman said in a light tone reported by foxsportsasia.com. He then added: “We cannot do anything about the draw.” The three-time Champions League-winning manager then commented on Real Madrid’s appearance against Brugge. “We are happy with the victory and the way we play,” he added.
“We have difficulty with our game because they usually play with five at the back and, today, they play with four. It takes 10 or 15 minutes for the players to adjust. The second half is better in every area, “he added.
The draw for the last 16 of the Champions League will take place on Monday 16 December at noon at UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland.
