UEFA plans to use video refereeing (VAR) in the Champions League from next season but is unlikely to use the technology during this, or even the final, said its president Aleksander Ceferin on Friday.

The European football governing body has so far resisted the implementation of the VAR system, which allows key incidents to be reviewed with the use of video recordings and was used at the World Cup in Russia this year.

Ceferin said the intention is for the VAR to be introduced next season from the final qualifying round onwards and also in the annual Super Cup match between the Champions League and European League winners.

It would also be used both in the group stage and in the subsequent knockout stages.

“The plan, for now, is to use it from next season… with the first game of next season’s Super Cup,” he told reporters. “The VAR is not entirely clear at the moment…. but we also know that there is no turning back now.

“He’s much more problematic than he looks (…). The plan is to do it next season, but let’s see what happens. I don’t want to predict anything 100%.

About this season’s final, he said, “I’m not ruling it out, but it doesn’t look like it’s going to happen right now.
