American Serena Williams was the highest-earning athlete in 2018, adding up to her third consecutive year at the top of the Forbes ranking, according to the annual list that was published Tuesday and was dominated by tennis players.
Williams, who returned to the activity in March after giving birth in September, received $18.1 million as a result of her sponsorship agreements, Forbes said.
The American tennis player, who will try to equal Margaret Court’s record of 24 grand slam titles when she competes in the U.S. Open, won twice as much money off the court as any other female athlete, according to Forbes.
Denmark’s Caroline Wozniacki, who won her first Grand Slam title at this year’s Australian Open, was second on the list with a combined win of $13 million, while current Flushing Meadows champion Sloane Stephens came in third with a total revenue of $11.2 million.
Spain’s Garbine Muguruza ($11 million) and Russia’s Maria Sharapova ($10.5 million) completed the top five.
