Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori advanced on Wednesday to the semifinals of the US Open thanks to his victory by 2-6, 6-4, 7-6, 4-6-and 6-4 in sets over Marin Cilic, a small revenge after the Croatian put an end to his dream of winning a Grand Slam in the final of Flushing Meadows in 2014.
After Naomi Osaka beat Ukraine’s Lesia Tsurenko 6-1, 6-1 to become the first Japanese player to reach the top four of a Grand Slam in 22 years, Nishikori also qualified for the semi-finals after more than four hours of play.
On Wednesday, Nishikori had to work hard to beat Cilic, who four years ago had won in consecutive sets to win the title in New York.
In the next round, the Asian tennis player will face Serbian Novak Djokovic, who beat Australia’s John Millman 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4.
