Antoine Griezmann once again proved to be the decisive figure for Atletico Madrid by scoring the only goal that led to a home win over Levante on Sunday, keeping Diego Simeone’s side close to league leaders Barcelona.
Griezmann scored from the penalty spot in the 57th minute to score for the fifth straight game shortly after Levante midfielder Nikola Vukcevic was whistled a hand in the area.
Barcelona 2-1 on Thursday’s Copa del Rey, had a chance to draw when Jose Luis Morales came to play. However, the striker’s shot bounced off Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak’s chest.
Atletico dominated the first half without much chance and had even taken the lead when Koke scored in the 10th minute, but the goal was canceled by a foul by midfielder Rodri after the referee’s video review (VAR) method was used.
Simeone was forced to place right-back Juanfran on the left of the defence for lack of personnel, and the Argentinian coach suffered another setback in defence when center-half Stefan Savic had to be replaced at the start of the game.
The victory took Atletico to second place in the league with 38 points after 19 games, two points behind Barcelona who host Eibar later this Sunday.
