Boxing: Callum Smith warns Saul Canelo Alvarez

Callum Smith warned Saul Canelo Alvarez that he had become an evil enemy for this year’s fight. Until now, Canelo has not officially announced his first fight in 2020.

Initially, Canelo was associated with clashes with Ryota Murata in Japan. Smith also remained on Canelo’s list of challengers with Billy Joe Saunders, a fellow Super Intermediate world champion.

The holder of the WBA ‘super’ title rejected suggestions that he was too risky for the four-division world champion, Canelo. But Smith did not believe his superior size and strength would cause serious problems for ‘Canelo’.

‘I think everyone is just waiting to see who he chooses,’ Smith told reporters.

‘If it were me, I would be happy. If not, I would be in a good division, there were a lot of big fights out there for me, outside ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, so I’m in a good position. Just sit and wait and hopefully we can sort one of the big names.’

‘Style makes a fight. I think I’m a bit of a bad fighter for him. I’m 190 cm, I’m much bigger than him, I can hit. I am not ideal for fighting, but I will not take anything from ‘Canelo’ Alvarez, he is a special fighter and he is one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.’

‘I wouldn’t say he avoided me. I just thought there was a large list of opponents who wanted to fight him, so he had a lot of choices, and he chose who he wanted to fight. Anyone who gets a job, just take it.’

Conversely, fighting fellow British boxers with Saunders can be done, if no one is chosen by Canelo, or Smith might go to America to look for another big fight. ‘Billy Joe Saunders is another Englishman who has earned a world title – it’s a good domestic fight,’ Smith said.

‘Daniel Jacobs is a big name in America, somewhere I clearly want to get my name bigger, so there’s a big potential fight out there for me.’
