Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata joined Atletico Madrid on loan until the end of next season, the Spanish club said Monday in a statement.
The 26-year-old underwent a medical check-up in Spain on Sunday after Chelsea signed Argentinian Gonzalo Higuain on loan last week.
Morata spent four seasons at the Academia del Atlético before joining Real Madrid. He also played for Juventus before joining Chelsea in July 2017, scoring 24 goals in 72 games.
His last appearance for Chelsea was against Nottingham Forest on 5 January, when he scored both goals in a 2-0 FA Cup victory.
“Thus comes to our club a consecrated scorer with extensive experience in the most demanding leagues in the world,” said Atletico on their website.
“With the incorporation of Morata comes to our club a very talented forward who defines very well in the last meters of the field either with his foot or head given its size (189 cm.). He stands out not only for his scoring ability but also for his ability to associate and assist his team-mates in front of goal,” the club said.
